Two Stories

It's a gorgeous spring morning in Mississippi. We're on vacation, it's beautiful outside, we're with our siblings we haven't seen for nearly a year...and of course I don't feel well. Isn't that how it goes? So the guys are off hiking and the girls and the toddler are home doing projects and lounging around.

I'm pretty sure you don't want me to be troubleshooting projects with my current sick-brain, so I thought I would share two GCT Level 5 stories we received about Pinstrosity disasters with you.

Lina says, "I am a floundering SAHM [stay at home mom], trying my best to engage with my kids more than I engage with Facebook.  On this particular day, after making a sensory tub of "rainbow rice", I was quite proud of myself.  The toddler was having fun running her fingers through the pretty colored rice and I wasn't freaking out about the mess I'd have to sweep up off the kitchen floor when she was done. I jinxed it all when I let myself think, "yeah, I've got this whole Mom thing down."  Pretty much exactly at that moment, with the wee fingers still in the rice, the cat jumped in and claimed his new litter box.  Epic."

The caption on this Pinterest pin says, "Dr. Oz White Teeth Remedy: 1/4 cup Baking Soda + Juice of Half Lemon. Squeeze lemon juice into baking soda. Note: The solution will bubble. Dip a cotton ball into the solution and apply it to teeth. Let sit for only one minute. Brush teeth as usual."  When you click on the pin though it takes you to a spam site.
Kristen says, "So I've gotten a pretty good kick out of your site. Like any self-proclaimed pinterest freak, I've had my share of failures-- I nearly burned down my house trying to make the grilled cheese sandwich in the sideways toaster, I've made my share of disasters involving mod podge, and our Lightning McQueen birthday cake ended up looking like a pile of red sludge. But there's something about me that just keeps trying, and when I saw this pin, my vanity kicked in. Whiter teeth in a minute using stuff I have on hand? Count me in. I mixed up the ingredients a couple days ago and was thrilled at my whiter smile. I even told my husband "Look how awesome this is, let's do your teeth next!" Lucky for him, he doesn't trust the internet when it comes to matters of his body :)"

"And that brings me to today, where I am preparing for my first ever root canal. The acid from the lemon juice is way too harsh on most teeth, and like many on pinterest have already found it causes your gums to hurt like heck for a couple of days. In my case, I already had a cavity and our Dr. Oz creation ate right through what was left of my enamel. Our dentist has told me in no uncertain terms that this CAN work for some people, but most will just end up doing damage to their teeth. Hope this helps save someone's smile in the process :)"

So beware the rogue cat and the diy automatic root canal...not so fun. I hope you all are enjoying the warmth  and sunshine...unless it's not sunshiny where you are then I hope you're enjoying....the clouds? I hope you're enjoying yourself and having a great day!

  1. I don't know if this Pin was actually on Dr. Oz or not, but I don't trust anything with his name on it. There was a 6 page article about him in the Atlantic a few years ago about how many bad pieces of medical advice he gave out. It went into more than just him but other doctors on Oprah, but it remains true. Also, everything associated with him is spammy, there was a brief Dr. Oz and Weight Watchers connection, and everyone who signed up for it got spammed, it quickly died and was swept under the rug by weight watchers, which they shouldn't have ever agreed to the deal since he promotes unhealthy weight loss on his show too. Just a good warning, if you see Dr Oz's name, stay away.

    1. I totally agree. I am a medical professional and it makes me cringe when patients come in saying "Well, Dr. Oz told me this..." I cannot stand that quack!

  2. I'm mad sorry you had to suffer, but so glad I saw this before I did it!

You suffered for beauty so that I didn't have to. :-)

  3. Aw, that cat story makes me laugh so hard, even though I definitely feel your pain. I had a feeling that lemon juice was too much for teeth. My sympathies! Root canals are no fun!

  4. I use this mix for cleaning the grout between the tiles in my bathroom and kitchen, and it's powerful stuff. Seeing what it does to the grout, I'd never think of using it in my teeth! (I mean, I'm happy I learned about its use for cleaning first xD)
Also, what you dentist told, that it might work for some people but for most it will only do damage, is true also for storebought whitener toothpaste. My cousin started using a whitener from Colgate, and ended up with terribly snesitive teeth. =/

    1. No, but Cameron and I each have a sibling in MS so we took a road trip out to see them. We've loved seeing this part of the South though and have had a wonderful time!

  6. I think any product made for whitening at home is too harsh. I can't use any toothpaste labeled "whitening," or the skin inside my mouth starts peeling off in big sheets! It's horrible. :(

  7. Glad you had a good time. I live in North MS. :)Misty

  8. Haha, glad we can agree that "Dr. Oz" doesn't equal "miracle". Had the second part of the root canal today, still mad at myself. And seriously, Juli, as GROUT cleaner? What in the world was I(and Dr Oz) thinking?!

  9. We use peroxide at home for teeth whitening. Just dip the qtip and scrub your teeth. It even says on the bottle that you can use as a gargle/rinse. Tried that once and it tasted horrible! I just about barfed. It works over time though... About a week before you see real results. :-)

  10. HA-ha!!! The Rainbow Sensory Rice pin and photo are mine, thank goodness neither one of my two cats ever tried to use our sensory boxes as a litter box. I did have a reader write to me once because she was freaking out that her dog ate the rice out of an unattended sensory box, I guess they should always be used with supervision!

Thanks so much for the laugh this morning!! : )
