The Em-Life: Keeping Up Appearances, Day 1

**For 1 Week (and only one week, thank goodness!) Emilee and Marquette attempted to live a life that matched up to Social Media Standards, mostly just to show what that could look like in real life and how ridiculous the idea is.**

Welcome to our series, Keeping Up Appearances, new to the blog? Start here to follow our week long attempt to live up to social medias standards!

Exhausted.
That's how I can describe day one.
Accomplished.
That's also how I can describe day one.
I knew going in to this challenge that it would be difficult, then I had a little moment in time where I thought I should be doing way more than I was and that I was going to be bored with how much time I had on my hands. I cannot begin to tell you how overwhelming this thing is already! Hallelujah it is only a week long!
Here we go! Let's just jump in, shall we?!
Have you ever had this happen to you: (*internal conversation*) "Is today so-and-so's birthday? I think it is, but I'm not 100% certain, I'll just pop on FB and double check." 47 minutes later your FB lurking on a girl you went to middle school with (who FINALLY got her braces off and is doing really well in life BTW). Has that every happened to you ? Because it happens to me all.the.time.
In order to help me focus more on productive matters I decided to take this pin and adult-ify it for myself.

I modified it a bit, seeing as sometimes social media is part of my business and I'm an adult...so there's that. My modifications included that I had to do something productive for work (like accomplish a task on my to-do list) before I can turn on the TV or do anything personal on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest etc.). Usually when I wake up I browse social media to really keep myself from falling back asleep, I'm not sure where this habit came from but I hate it, I thought this would help me to beat it. So far so good. I didn't do anything on social media today until 2PM, I had exercised, taken care of all the animals, all my cleaning for the day was done and I had accomplished some work stuff. It was a nice break and it didn't feel like it was something I was doing just to pass time, or because I was bored or avoiding work.

Next on the list, dinner!
For the challenge we have to cook three new recipes this week that include at least one ingredient we have never used before. Today recipe used shallots, prior to the challenge I didn't know what they even looked like and was a little cautious. After I tracked them down at the grocery store I followed the directions to cook them and was surprised to find that they aren't that scary after all!
Here is the recipe I used on day one!
I didn't realize until literally right this moment that I used brown sugar...and I'm not supposed to use sugar. Derp. Oh well, it's in my belly and there isn't much I can do about it now except for learn from this and pay more attention! This recipe was really good though! It felt like I was eating at a restaurant and not in my own kitchen! Here is my version:

Not too shabby eh? We weren't able to get the veggies quite as thin as she did, but we were cutting them by hand and not with a Julienne. It was good! A little time consuming, but delicious!

I also used some cleaning pins I found, here were the originals, my results and my thoughts on those:
This one had zero instructions, what you see is what you get. I vacuumed my floor and rug, and then squeegeed, here is what I got!
My hair clump isn't as big as hers, but that was on my floor and I'm glad that it isn't anymore!
We got a dog about a week ago, and this is the first time we have vacuumed since we got her. Imagine what that pile would look like after a month! :o

It is kind of hard to see, but the left half of the rug was squeegeed here and the right was not. You can kind of see a line of hair where I stopped the squeegeeing. *hehe squeegeeing...I love that non-word*

This task was labor intensive and gave me a headache from leaning forward on the floor and scrubbing for so long and also made my knees hurt form kneeling. Because of this I wouldn't do this every single week. Regular vacuuming does a lot for our carpet/house so I will probably employ this one once a month...if I am being completely honest. It does work fairly well though. Pinterest for the win!

Next I cleaned the base boards...full disclosure the only time I have done this in my whole life is when we were moving and wanted our deposit back lol
When we did that it had been so long since they had been cleaned that the dust was really caked on and was hard to get off. This pin eliminates that!

The original uses Bounce, but the article itself says "dryer sheets", so I guess my Gain will have to do. I didn't realize how dirty my baseboards were already! We've only been here 8 weeks!
In the second picture it is a little hard to see, but you can definitely tell the right side is clean and the left is not. Cool trick! I did all the baseboards not covered with furniture in about five minutes! Bonus: The article says that the fabric softener sticks to the boards so that dust is less likely to stick there, so not only does it pick up the hair and dirt but it prevents it from coming back! Woohoo! I ended up using three sheets in my 1,200 sq/ft apartment.

Worked pretty nice right?! It did just what it was supposed to do!

Next, I wanted to streamline my morning routine, I wanted to get every drop of productiveness out first thing in the morning instead of zombie-ing my way through the first few hours. I have always seen those pins that show "10-things to do the second you wake up", or "12 habits of successful early morning risers" etc etc, so I thought I would find one that looked doable and go for it!

This pin consists of doing productive things first thing in the morning like: getting up early, drinking water right away, not having screen time for the first hour of your day, reading something positive and uplifting, moving your body, eating breakfast, getting some sunshine.
Day 1 of this went fantastic!
I got up early-ish (earlier than usual, but certainly not 5A.M), I read something positive, got my water down first thing and took the dog for an hour long walk, I didn't do any screen time until about 11:30 that morning, and I made and ate an amazing breakfast!
This one wasn't too awful on the first day, we'll see how it goes later in the week!

I have always admired women who take the time to contour and highlight with their makeup daily, I think it looks fantastic! But...I've always been too chicken. Enter Pinterest, enter a Keeping Up Appearances Social Media Challenge...

This pin did not come with any instructions and was pretty hard to track down.
I wasn't sure if I was supposed to do my regular routine and then contour as the very last thing I did or to contour first and then do everything else?! So many questions!
So I looked at the picture and tried to remember back to all those 2A.M. Youtube beauty channel binge watch sessions and thought I would do my regular routine and then contour on top after everything else was done. Here are the results!

Normal routine, minus mascara.

Will this thing really work?! It's a little iffy! JK, this is terrifying...I had to leave for work like 30 minutes after this picture was taken, I was so worried I would have to take everything off and start all over so that I didn't look like Snookie at work!
The Results

Normal routine (minus mascara and lipgloss)                                                   Contour Routine

I think this whole routine definitely makes my face have more definition and shape, I felt like a movie star all day too, bonus!
It turned out great! I think I look more mature, more put together, and the second my husband saw it he said, "Wow! Your makeup looks great! Did you do something different?", I showed him the middle pictures and he didn't believe me, so the next morning when I tried it again he sat in the bathroom to watch me, he had to see it with his own eyes! I was super surprised how well this went, I thought for sure I would crash and burn, but I was delightfully surprised here!
I also had people who know me well tell me that my face looked thinner that day, so I would definitely say this is a pin win! The secret? Blending Sponge!
Side note: I bought all the exact products they used in the pin, and while the highlight and contour sticks both broke in half within 24 hours of using them, the blush is stellar! It lasts all day and looks really natural. I will definitely be switching to the Revlon blush permanently.

As long as we are talking about beauty, I found another pin that pertains to my real life that I wanted to implement into the challenge. I have always wanted really clear skin, but for the last 6 years it has been a struggle for me. I've tried lots of different products that work for a little while and then I end up back at square one a few weeks into the routine. A coworker of mine showed me Acure Organic products about a year ago and I was curious so I thought I would try them out.
I literally cannot tell you how much I love their line! Again, here enters Pinterest and the KUA challenge. I have always wanted to be the person who washes their face twice a day EVERYDAY, but I just have never been that girl. Now that I have a line of skincare products I love I felt it was time to try it again. It seems like a very adult thing to do and I was excited to give it another go. Bonus, I had two of the three of the products, and the one I needed was on sale! We'll see how it goes this week, and how my skin feels!

And last but not least for the day, I decided for the challenge ( and for life in general) that I wanted to do some sort of clean eating for the week (and the rest of the month thereafter). I had dabbled in Paleo, and Whole 30, but I wanted to try it with more intent, and since I had to make new recipes this week I thought maybe that could help me be excited about this! I was planning on doing Whole 30, but they were a little out of my range of what I wanted, so Mark Sisson's The Primal Blueprint was the one I went with. I've read his book (previously) and his tactics make sense to me, so along with everything else we were doing this week, we were on full Paleo too!

As you can see, day one was VERY busy. But surprisingly I felt like it went really well and that I accomplished everything I needed to that day. Maybe this challenge won't be so bad after all?? Time will tell!
Update: I forgot my squats. Oops. Completely slipped my mind. So much for going "perfect".

No-Sew Pet Bed

Schools out. Check!
Back from vacation. Check!
Summer is here. Check!

You know what this means?!
I'M BACK!!!!

And it is good to be back.
Today I was going through emails and this one just totally made me chuckle, for those of us who are cat people ( I am animal people, I love them ALL) this will ring especially true. I just had to share.

The Original

No-sew pet bed. If my hedgehog would use it I would be ALL over that. However she is a diva and would just stick her nose up at me (literally).
Well Mary Beth tried this out for her feisty feline....and this is how it turned out, check it out!
The Pinstrosity

Why is it that you lovingly make things/buy things for your pet and they refuse to follow through with a proper thank you and use it. Because they know we will still love them that's why.

Here is what Mary Beth had to say about it, and I thought this was a funny story so enjoy!

"Way back in February, we added Ikea's Hemnes 5-drawer chest to our bedroom for additional storage.  It's a little over 4' tall, and Weasley likes to climb on top of it, stretch out and sleep.

Let me preface this next part with the fact that I've been watching a significant amount of My Cat from Hell on Animal Planet lately.  If you haven't seen it, it's like the dog whisperer for cats.  This tatto-ed, convertible-driving, guitar-carrying guy named Jackson Galaxy (Yes, Jackson Galaxy.  I can't make this up.) visits people with problem cats, and after weeks of therapy, the problem cats become beloved family pets.  90% of the time, the cat's bad behavior seems to boil down to the fact that the cat feels confined and limited, and giving it more space to play and explore turns things around completely.    There was this one episode in particular where a couple had their cat confined to one room and it would hide and scratch and bite and pee all over everything, but when they let it out into the rest of the house and built a series of steps so it could roam around on high shelves, all their problems were solved.

Obviously, in the wake of viewing that episode, I decided that the best way to stop Weasley from annoying the crap out of us every morning by batting incessantly at the blinds was to make it nice and cozy for him to sleep up high on top of the chest of drawers.

Now, I'm looking extra silly because that link clearly provides easy-to-follow directions for making one of these correctly.  You'll just have to believe me when I say I could only find a picture (not directions) when I decided to undertake this project a few weeks ago.

Directions or not, it seemed pretty simple.  I found tons of ideas for making no-sew fleece blankets on Pinterest using two pieces of fleece, so I figured I'd just do that and stuff batting between the two layers before finishing off the final side...
So, back to my pet bed.  What went wrong?
  1. My method was easy and successful enough, but obviously, I didn't size this correctly.  My intention was to make a pillow that was the same size as the chest of drawers, so I started by laying my material on the top of the chest and cutting a rectangle of the same size.  What I didn't realize is that I should have added 3-4" on each side for the fringe, which wouldn't add dimension to the pillow once it was stuffed.  The result?  Instead of a cat bed specially made to fit  on top of the chest of drawers, I wound up with something more like a mini throw pillow.  But even if I'd made it the correct dimensions, this still would have been a failure, which brings me to point #2 . . .
  2. Cats are butt holes.  They do what they want.  And obviously Weasley does not want to sleep on top of the cozy, snuggly cat bed I made especially for him.
Witness Weasley precariously positioning himself so close to the edge of the chest that two of his legs are falling off just so he doesn't have to touch the offensive cat bed."

Did I mention how much I laughed when she said cats are butt holes? Probably too much, but I have had lots of cats and that just fit too purrrfectly. ;)

This just goes to show, if you make it, they may or may not come depending on their mood that day/hour.
Happy Wednesday Pinstrosipeeps!!!

Also if you missed Marquette's Mix It Up Monday I think you will thoroughly enjoy it. It's a big and little announcement for one the Pinstrositeers! Check it out!!

Christmas Card Creativity

I don't know about the rest of you...but I'm diggin' Emilee's awesome ideas from last night. After I type this up, I'm definitely heading over to Pinterest to put things into action.

So...my last post before Christmas. I've had this on my list of things to stress over because I wanted to do something big and fun and awesome. Well, last night I sat finishing up photo shoot edits and staring at my still undecorated tree (seriously...it has no lights or ornaments...it still looks exactly as you last saw it) and worrying over how to finish everything I needed to before Christmas, and I made a decision. I decided that I'm okay with being average today. So this post may not be super witty or inspiring, but in a way it was therapeutic for me, so I count it as a win.

What is one thing about Christmas that many women (and some men I'm sure...but in my experience, not so much) stress over starting in September? The Family Christmas Card. What do we do? What do we wear? Will Aunt June think it's too cheesy? Will the Donald's think it's too ostentatious? Do we do a classy picture or one that shows our true side? Portrait or landscape? How can we crop out that guy picking his nose in the background that the photographer didn't notice?

Here's an awesome little Calvin and Hobbes sequence that I think many people can relate to on this very subject:

I made our cards last year, but this year I went quick and simple and ordered cheap ones online. The photo of us is from last year, but we pretty much look the same (I'll attach our card at the end of this post). Besides, it's not how beautiful, clever, or cool the card is that matters. It's really not a competition ladies.

Rachel sent us her Christmas Card story and the adventure she had getting it.

"I wanted to share with you my Christmas card fiasco."

"So the past few years my husband and I have done Christmas cards with a photo of us, and this year I wanted to make it a little more interesting by including our dog, Lexie. I saw this pin of 40 Christmas Card photo ideas with dogs and thought I'd try one of them."

"I decided on this one:"

The Original Pin

"because our Lexie is a fellow German girl like the pup in the picture, and I thought it'd be pretty easy to recreate since Lexie always has a stick in her mouth anyway."

"The first part of finding a "Christmas Tree Stick" was pretty easy. We clipped it off a try and then stuck a simple ornament on the end of it. Next we rounded Lexie up, grabbed the camera and handed her the stick. Easier said than done! I swear to you Lexie is always gathering sticks, playing fetch and gnawing on them, but this time she wanted nothing to do with it! She would not keep it in her mouth long enough to snap a single photo."

"We gave up pretty quickly, but then I had the idea to put some peanut butter on the stick, so that maybe it'll heighten her interest. I wanted to be sure to get them printed in time, which meant I only had time after work to do it. My husband gets home after it's dark out, so I had to handle both posing Lexie and taking the photo on my own."

The Pinstrosity

"As you can see, she finally held the stick, but it was so awkward and hard to get her to pose nicely with it. In many of the pictures her eyes are freakishly bugged out and in many other you can see the peanut butter on her gums."

"In the end, I am grateful I have a husband who knows how to use photo shop."

The Pin Spin

"Our card wasn't exactly what I had in mind but still a big hit nonetheless. If you want to try this for next year, I wold recommend peanut butter, a second hand, and someone who can use photo shop!"

"Merry Christmas!"

Working with animals is hard...you often don't know what to expect (even if you think you). An animal can be well trained and still get camera shy. Just be patient, stay calm, be adaptive, and have treats on hand. Sometimes everything will go just as planned, and sometimes you have to adapt. I was doing a goofy shoot for fun at my aunts house, taking portraits of her chickens, when we came up with the idea of bringing in their "big mean pit bull" (Patch is the coolest dog) and posing him with the chicks. I originally had the picture in my head of Patch sitting up tall with the chicks at his feet, but he wanted to be down on the same level as the chicks. So we let him lay down and he let the chicks crawl all over him. In the end I loved that picture more than the one I originally had in my head.
http://marquettephoto.blogspot.com/2011/03/blog-post.html

So just go with the flow and be adaptable...you might end up with something completely different from what you planned (as both Rachel and I did), but it may still be wonderful.

I hope your final Christmas and Holiday preparations are going well and that you have a season of peace and joy wherever you are.

Haunting Doggy Costumes!

Happy Monday! So today I was going through all the posts we have recieved as of late, and there was one about Halloween, and I know it's not October but I just got so EXCITED!!!! So here to jump start the fall season is today's Pinstrosity!

The Original

This little gem is from a website specifically all about dogs wearing costumes, having a bad day? Head over there for a good chuckle.
Kate sent us this photo of her dog, and her attempt at the costume...

The Pinstrosity

Now it looks like she simply didn't use enough fabric, and from the holes around the dogs eyes, the measuring was hard to do on a moving target. Having done the whole pet costume thing, they don't always like to be your sewing guinea pig, unless they are a guinea pig, then by all means...

Anyways here are a few tips!

-It looks like her dog is pretty large, if you aren't sure how much fabric to use, overestimate when you are buying it , and then you have extra for other projects, or more in case it doesn't turn out like you had hoped. On a side note, white cotton fabric is cheap at any fabric store, or even at Wal-Mart, so you aren't going to break the bank if you get 2-3 yards for a bigger dog like this.

-Like kids and husbands, it might be easier to measure for sewing projects while your dog is sleeping. Some of you might be thinking, "What sewing?! I didn't see anything about sewing there?!" Now I know this project doesn't actually have any sewing, or directions for that matter, but seeing as it needs fabric I give it the general label of "sewing".

-Cut your holes for the eyes and mouth area, and THEN use a marker to make them stand out, of course put paper underneath so you don't mark whatever is underneath.

-This project really just looks like they cut the wholes for the eyes and mouth area, then marked the perimeter of the holes with black marker, put it on the dogs and draped the rest over their bodies!

**I want to make a disclaimer, some might find costumes for their dogs to be innapropriate, but as with anything make sure your dog is no way uncomfortable, in any danger or going to be hurt by anything. As long as the costume lets him breath and open his mouth fine, doesn't obstruct his vision too much, and allows him to move freely I don't see why this would hurt him. Also keep in mind some pets are just not ok with costumes, I have had dogs that if you put a sweater on them they won't go ANYWHERE. So keep that in mind this Halloween season.**

On that note, don't forget Halloween is coming up soon and we are looking forward to some spooky posts! Have a great Monday!
