Body Sugaring...or should I say Body Blistering

I'm pretty much a wuss when it comes to pain. I had my eyebrows waxed once and they were sore for 3 days. Maybe that's because I have bushes for eyebrows...but I think I prefer the bushes over the pain I get any time I move my eyebrows. That is such a small centralized location...I can't imagine what it would be like to wax my legs or underarms. It makes me shudder just thinking of it. My husband likes to gross me out by grabbing as much of his leg hair as he can and ripping it out. Gross. There are many women much stronger than I am though and who can tough out getting various parts of their body waxed, and I seriously do give props to you.  Morgan is one of these women who can out tough me...she found a DIY Body Sugaring pin and decided to give it a go at home (which is one pin you will probably never see me try).

This site has 2 different recipes, full directions and helpful tips, along with a funny write-up.

Morgan decided to give it a go and gathered her supplies. She says, "I followed the second recipe and the house reeked of honey (I'm not a big fan). It took a couple hours for the glass jar to cool long enough to even touch it.  Then it took another couple of hours to get the temperature of the mixture to be correct.  Then when I finally got it down right, the mixture was EVERYWHERE! I could barely get my spoon in the jar (I didn't have a popsicle stick) plus it was dinner time and I barely had any left over.  So the next day I go to the store (which is not close since I live out in the "country") to buy more honey.  This time the mixture heated too quickly and wasn't looking the same as the day before.  So a few hours later, the stuff on top was cooled but I must have dipped the spoon too far in where it was A Lot warmer!  Everything was such a mess I just threw the jar away.  This is my leg 3 days later after my youngest daughter popped the blister (ow!)"

The Pinstrosity

Ew and ow all at once.

So pretty much all Morgan and I have to say here is to make sure the sugar mixture has had time to cool before applying it to your skin. Blistering your skin is one way to get rid of hair temporarily, but I'm pretty sure it's not the look you want to go for and that there are better ways. Be careful when you try these home beauty regimens and remedies.

  1. I did something similar. I was using a butter knife, since I didn't have a popcicle stick. I was transporting the hot mixture to the bathroom to finish cooling and to apply. The metal butter knife fell out of the hot mixture and landed on my toe. I stuck to Nair or a razor after that severe burn!

On a side note, if you put a pickle slice on where you burned yourself, as soon as you can, and leave it on until its pretty much room temp, it helps draw the burn out and you won't blister. (Holy run in sentence batman!)

  2. Sugaring is great when done by a professional. I would NEVER suggest trying it unless you are. My sister took classes to get certified and she came home with bruises because her classmate was practicing on her, incorrectly.

  3. If you were still sore three days later, something went very wrong :( I have very, very sensitive skin, and even I don't have to worry about my skin being red or feeling sore for more than an hour. Here's a tip, though: Take an aspirin or ibuprofen (the latter especially if you notice slight swelling or redness immediately after you wax) 30-45 minutes before waxing to help with pain and the skin's reaction. There are also products on the market to help with the pain and sensitivity of skin before and after waxing :)

  4. I used this recipe twice to wax my arms, and it worked great both times! My attempt was definitely a pin win! I did the microwave version and let it cool. Yes, it did take a while, but, eh, no biggie. For me is was really good though. And it tastes good, he he...

  5. For eyebrows, before I start plucking, I put some Oragel on the area and wipe it off. Helps numb it.

  6. Scary dangerous. I'm glad she wasn't hurt worse. :( There's several things on Pinterest that could hurt you or damage your belongings (the tv screen cleaner pops to mind).

  7. I'm a wuss to pain too so don't feel bad! I shave and that's when I feel like doing that. Anyone wants to give me funny looks I'll give them right back. Too tired to mess with all that I work in a factory and have 2 kids and a husband of 12 years my thought is.... who do I even need to think about impressing? LOL

  8. I used Youtube videos as a guide, and I had no issues with it. The recipe I used was just sugar, water, and lemon juice. It was no more dangerous than cooking soup. I waxed both my arms a few times, as well as parts of my face. (I would NOT use it on brows, though, as it would be too easy to remove too much hair.) One tip is to cool the wax on a cheap tray so it is in a shallow layer. It cools more quickly, and it is easier to grab a chunk with just your fingers.

  9. I have used this recipe several times, and it is really important to have a candy thermometer so that it is heated properly. I applied with a wooden stick the first time, and butter knife every other time. The results were surprisingly good. There were a few little spots that just didn't seem to want to wax off (on my legs), but afterward I enjoyed a couple of weeks with no shaving...I call that a win! Oh, and it does hurt the first time...quite a bit...but subsequent waxing sessions were much less painful!

  10. I did not do this but I did the episom salt and baking soda bath soak and ended up with burns on my back! I soaked for the 15 minutes like the pin said and noticed after 10 minutes my skin was on fire! It took 2 weeks for the marks to fade.

  11. I've tried this. Horrible idea. I didn't end up burning myself, but I ruined a bowl. (plastic. melted almost completely through. Oops) And instead of burning myself I ended up covered in a ridiculous amount of bruises. I was asked for weeks if my relationship was ok. I would just laugh and tell them it was an unfortunate waxing accident.

  12. I think this was a user error more than anything - I've sugar waxed for years and never had an issue !
