Who Loves Daddy?

You know the show "Kids Say the Darndest Things"? There needs to be a slideshow sequel called "Kids Do the Darndest Things". We'll start it out here.

The Original

Aren't they cute? This is such a great picture to put together for a loved dad. Should be pretty easy to put together right? Well, remember these are kids we're working with.

The Pinstrosity

While this may not bring the "Awe" and lovey-dovey feeling you're aiming at, it will definitely bring some chuckles and a "Yep, those are the kids I know."

Getting your children to cooperate for photos is hard. I gave some suggestions and a link in our last Photo Fiasco post that may help out. Two more GREAT sites (both of which are written by the same fabulous photographer) to check out for tips on taking better photos of your children are
http://www.momtog.com/ and http://thelensloves.com/. Seriously, go check out the blogs and the work of DrewB Photography and if you don't fall in love with her photos then I'll eat my socks. Ok, no I won't...but seriously, I love her work.

Now for specifics on making this particular shot work we have the words straight from Freckle Photo:

"Last year I photographed my kids with a special message written on their feet.  I photographed this on our concrete driveway.  The light surface of the driveway acts as reflector and bounces light naturally onto your subjects.  Our driveway is shaded by a big oak tree.  You want to avoid direct sunlight so that you don’t get harsh shadows on your kids faces."

  1. I did a picture similar to this one (but we only have three kids so it said "WE <3 DAD"). It was a spur of the moment picture. I'd dressed our girls up all fancy and curled their hair during Spring Break. I had even let them wear some of my makeup for the pictures. They got to wear their fancy new Easter dresses. At the end I remembered this picture. I grabbed the lip liner from my purse and wrote on the bottom of their feet. I have fibromyalgia and getting down on a cement driveway was just not goign to happen, lol. We were out at a park up a canyon. I had the girls (ages 6, 7, 9) sit side by side just above a short rock retaining wall (2 or 3 feet high). This got them a little higher so I could get the shot without sacrificing my own body! I took several shots -- partly because otherwise someone is inevitably mid-blink. I also played with the focus a little bit to get the narrow depth of field so they're slightly blurred. It turned out beautiful! Oh, one other thing I made sure of: since the girls were all wearing dresses I made sure the skirts fell neatly over their legs and were touching the ground between their legs. Didn't want the shot to look...er... naughty. The final shot was awesome. A big print of it hangs in Daddy's office!

  3. If you look closely you can tell there is a hand on the shoulder of the boy on the left and a shoulder missing from the boy in the middle they had to photoshop the little girl into the photo....

    1. I think actually what's going on is that the little girl (being the littlest) has to sit so far up so that the feet line up that it creates a funny illusion. There's a lighter horizontal band above the boy-in-blue's shoulder and that's the boy-in-red's arm. The shoulder of the boy-in-red looks cut off, but it's the sunlight catching on the little girls hair. If the girls is photoshopped in, then I still give props to the photographer as she has placed in perfect shadows (see where their feet touch, the shadows on the concrete, and the shading on their skin) and blended it amazingly.

  4. This is Melissa from frecklephoto. First of all thanks for including my photo in your post :). I actually love your photo!! I think moments like these are important to remember. I keep all of my outtakes- believe me, my kids don't always cooperate. I also wanted to let everyone know that this photo is definitely NOT Photoshopped. Just as "Pinstrosity" suggested, my daughter is much smaller than my boys and had to sit up farther to make her feet reach theirs. My oldest son actually has his arms on both his brothers shoulders. He's a big boy . . . just look at those feet!!

  5. Also, cameras are (unfortunately!) important here. It's the difference between the high-quality, professional-looking photos you see on Pinterest and the blurry, red-eyed pictures you get when you don't have one. And they don't have to be expensive!! Just Google, you'd be surprised. But even if you do go for a more expensive model, just buy one "like new" or "great" used condition on Amazon for a HUGE discount!

  7. Haha I did this but my boys hated having things written on their feet. So I ended up photoshopping in the letters on their feet. I had to photoshop two photos together too to get all of them looking at the camera. It turned out pretty cute in the end. :)
