Banana Poo Bread

Hello Pinstrositeers...Pinstrositites...Pinstrosicans? Hello world! Marquette here. I'm finally home after a wonderful week of visiting friends and family, getting lost in the mountains, and my best friends wedding. A huge thanks to Em for covering for me during the wedding hoopla and while I was without Internet access. It was amazing to come home and see the huge spike in viewers...we hit our 2nd million mark already! You guys are awesome.

I have a great Pinstrosity for you today from Lauren. I loved her story and how she told it so I'll let you read her story in her own words.

"I have been an avid pinner for a little over a year, but it was only until recently that I began testing out the recipe portion of my pins. My husband & I have been married for 2 months TODAY, so I have spent the past 2 months attempting to impress my man with my domestic abilities. I guess not everyone is cut out to be a Homemaker after all (cough...ME!..cough)."

"I was attempting to bake a recipe titled '(My) Best Banana Bread' and little did I know, it would be MY (& the world's) WORST banana bread!"

"I originally chose this pin because my husband LOVES banana bread & usually his mom sends him a care package with it during deployments & I figured maybe I should learn how to make his favorite snack & maybe, just maybe mine will blow his mother's away? Competitive... I know!"

"I was set! I bought all the ingredients, I even preserved my ripe & ready-to-go bananas a few days before & this is where the nightmare began!"

The Pinstrosity
"I took out my frozen naners and forgot all about them while I was chatting away with my sister on the phone & imagine my surprise when I peel the sweating-looking bananas open and discover this:"
Does this not look like poo?
"I was like WHATTT THE......? I then proceeded to "pour" the bananas (yeah never thought I'd say that either) into a bowl and stood there for a while wondering if it would still work & then I get a call from my husband saying he is on his way home. I wanted it to be baking before he came in so he would be greeted with the lovely aroma of banana bliss, so I figured "Screw it, I'm sure the bananas will still work!!" I began running around the kitchen like a mad woman tossing in each ingredient one by one....& in walks hunny. Whew! I made it just in time! So I take a peek into the oven & notice the bread is HUGE (really wish I would have taken a photo) & I ask him if it's normal considering it had only been in for maybe 5 min. & he wasn't sure, so I just ignore it. I peek again after about 10 minutes and notice it is now HUGE & BLACK so I pull it out and wonder why it is baking so fast, (the recipe said "55mins- 1hr"). I peel off the scorched top & notice a soupy banana mixture inside, so I think "well, maybe that part will be good" and I pop it back in for another 40 min. & pull out this:"

"My hubby & I each take a bite & "HOLY COW....WHAT ISSSSS THAT"? Charlie says "Sorry, baby" as he spits it into the sink & I have my eyes closed forcing myself to swallow my poisonous bite (&pride)."

"What in the heck happened? Where did I go wrong? I then re-read the recipe retracing my steps...."

"2 cups of flour? Check! 3/4 cup of granulated sugar? Check!.....3/4 Teaspoon of baking soda?"

"WAIT WHAAAAAAT? I thought it was CUPS!... Yeah, 3/4 TEASPOON & 3/4 CUP make a HUGE difference!"

"I tossed the banana brick & swore I'd never tell a soul until I discovered Pinstrosity & realized we all make mistakes & Pintrest is a great platform for failure! Okay & quite possibly success too, at least WE pinners are learning & trying to expand our creative abilities. Go us! :)"

"Side note: I attempted the banana bread a 2nd time using the CORRECT measurements & it was DELICIOUS. Charlie even went as far to say he prefers mine now! Happy Dances all around!"

So...the moral of the story here...unless your are making a huge batch of something, you'll probably never need 3/4 c. of baking soda. Thanks for the great submission and the laughs Lauren.

  2. OMgosh, that is hilarious! I'm so glad it turned out better the 2nd time.

  3. And, FYI, the strange texture of frozen bananas won't do anything to harm the finished bread. Banana bread has been my specialty since I was about 10 and learned that there was, in fact, a use for black bananas.

  4. This made me laugh out loud! So funny. I'm glad she figured it out later! :)

  5. When I was first married, I was going to make dinner for my husband, his brother and brother's wife. I found what seemed like an easy recipe for fettuccine alfredo, but I didn't know then that's there's a HUGE difference between fresh grated parmesan and the kind that comes in the green canister. That pasta was so gravely and gritty no one could choke it down. My cooking has improved since then! :-) Glad to hear your second attempt was a success!

  6. I would have stopped when I saw the "banana poo" in the bowl, lol. At least you kept going.

  7. Ahhhh, bless your heart. It was the thought that counted and glad to see your second attempt was successful. And a hi 5 for "one upping" mom's banana wife. You are a good wife and your husband is lucky to have you. Thanks for the LOL and glad it was an easy fix the second time around.

FYI - I doubt there is ANY recipe that would call for 3/4 Cup of baking soda (powder for that matter as well) if making just a loaf or two.

  8. Seriously rolling on my bed laughing! Loved how this was written. Yay for Lauren for getting it right the second time around! :)

  9. I try to avoid making unrated recipes for this reason. They never turn out well, ever.

  10. I am laughing so hard I am crying right now. The picture of the bananas in theb owl was too much! It reminds me of the time i tried to make my husband salsa and it turned out like foam....

  11. I always freeze my bananas for banana bread. I've been making it for years using the recipe from the Good Housekeeping cookbook. The 5 year old in me is ALWAYS amused by snipping off the end of the thawed banana and giving it a squeeze to make it "poo". Hehehehe.

  12. big tip: Pillsbury has a wonderful banana bread you make from the box. :) shhh nobosy will ever know

  13. o my funny bone! The woes of new cooks (and old)! I remember boiling eggs the first month of my marriage. Put them on to boil...went to work...came home to the smell of sulfer and egg pieces on the ceiling! As an older, not much wiser cook, I recently made deviled eggs with sea salt. Everyone spit them out. Evidently a whole teaspoon is too much.

  14. I always use gooey thawed bananas! they make the best bread... all the grandmas I know agree. :) I laughed at the baking soda part though! oh well, that's how we learn.

  15. I laughed so hard I started to cry! Been making banana bread for a long time, I'm 41 so probably about 30 years or so, and I have NEVER used frozen bananas......those things looked gross :-P..... Just before my bananas need to be thrown away I whip up a couple of loaves ......doesn't take to long and I don't have to deal with a disgusting bowl of banana poo ......... Ewwwwww

  16. @Limette, looks like the recipe is a hit if you actually follow the directions. Of course recipes never turn out well if you mess up the directions.

The picture of those bananas is seriously going to give me nightmares!

  17. Frozen "poo bananas" look gross, but they work great in banana bread. I always chuck any that get too brown into the freezer to use in baking. I'm good at making sure most foods are used up in a timely manner, but I can't help use up the bananas, because I'm allergic to them raw.

  18. Genuine tears...can't...stop...laughing! This is totally something that would happen to me. I am a disaster in the kitchen as proven by my recent minestrone soup recipe turned casserole due to adding an entire box of macaroni instead of the 1 cup the recipe called for. :)

  19. OMG I laughed so hard at this! When I was about 10 or 11, my best friend and I decided to make homemade cookies. I misread the recipe...it called for 1tsp of salt. Yeah, I put in one CUP of salt. They tasted horrible.

    I feel your pain!

  22. Seriously HILARIOUS!!! The picture of the banana "poo" looked more like over-grown nasty slimey slugs to me and my husband. Eeewwww!!! We were cracking up. Thanks for the great story (and pictures). :-)

  23. I use frozen bananas in my banana bread all the time - that was not the culprit here. Sorry.

  24. I use frozen bananas as well, but I NEVER freze them in their peels. This reminds me of my friend who tried to freeze bananas for bread for the first time, IN the peels, and they were a really yucky mess when she thawed them. Literally lughing hard at this right now!

  25. oh man I'm laughing so hard I have tears.

  28. This had me laughing out loud, so much I had tears in my eyes. That was the best baking story I have ever heard. I'm sure I'll be randomly chuckling over this one for a few days yet; and of course, every time I make banana bread!

  29. Those bananas, like the kind I prefer, look perfectly horrible, but will taste fine. I wait until mine are black and greasy on the outside (my bare minimum requirement is no yellow showing AT ALL). They are super nasty to peel, look and feel like slugs, but make the bread so much better, because they are so much sweeter and have a stronger banana taste. Of course, you'll probably need more, because they've started to break down and won't make a full (cup or whatever measurement).

They are fine to freeze in the peels, they look nasty and are a pain to peel, but it's just yucky looking.

  30. Oh crap, it's 10:08 at night, I'm supposed to get up a 4 tomorrow morning, and I sitting her in my living room . . . all by myself . . . laughing hysterically!! I literally have tears running down my face and feel like a crazy person for finding this post oh-so enjoyable!! Thanks for the story Lauren, you're the best!!

  31. I think you let your bananas sit way to long to freeze. If you look at my photo of the banana that were froze in the peeling it looks nothing like yours. There is nothing wrong with freezing bananas and they won't hurt you. Perhaps you need to try the other method and chunk them up and freeze them. Sorry about your recipe, but that is a big difference for the baking soda measurement.

  32. i bake banana bread once a week and use frozen bananas every time. it always turns out perfect. i also use a bread pan.

  33. Oh wow...I have no words for that banana picture. LOL!! That is DISGUSTING! Ha ha! Love her story though...what a great memory and story for down the road! :)
