My "Orange" Dress Makeover

So, not too long ago I tried to dye a dress orange. You remember that, right? If not, you can see that adventure here. Just as a refresher...the white dress turned pink.

Not only was it pink...but it still wasn't flattering and still was quite see through. This bum did not fit in the coverage zone of that tiny built in slip you see there.

So having only spent $11 on the dress and $9 on dye that didn't work, I decided to take it apart and see if I could remake it into something wearable. And if not, I was only out $20. More than I wanted to be out, but at least it wasn't an expensive dress I was getting set to experiment on!

So I sat down with my seam ripper and separated it all out. Took the zipper out, separated the skirt from the bodice, and took the lining off the bodice.

I thought this would be pretty simple. I stitched the edges of the bodice, tucked the back a little and turned it into a jacket. Easy! And then it was time for the skirt. It went fast. I added a back to the waist band and reattached the zipper. And I thought I was done!

Cameron came home, I put it all on to show him my handiwork, and the skirt wasn't pretty. It lumped funny in back where the zipper was, the waist band folded in on itself, and it made my hips look wider than they already are post 2 kids. And then the weird slip inside still looked weird even with me wearing another slip beneath it. It just wasn't going to cut it.

So out came the seam ripper again. Off came the zipper. Off came the waist band. Off came the built in slip completely. And off to Walmart I went (because on a Saturday evening, that was my option unless I wanted to drive an hour to the real fabric store).

I found some decent quality white knit, bought 3 yards of it and some elastic, and headed back home to experiment some more.

I should have taken step by step pictures, but I wasn't sure this was even going to work and by the time I got sewing it was 10 at night. I just wanted to get it done! But basically I split the knit fabric in two and sewed each section into a tube. I slipped one knit tube in the other, and then put the skirt fabric tube in the center and sewed them all together at the top and turned it right side out. From there I added the elastic, sewed a casing for it, and then hemmed the layers. Voila...a makeshift maxi skirt that was no longer see through!

It isn't the most beautiful skirt ever, but it is miles better than what the dress was and now I can actually wear it! It was perfect for my Easter outfit yesterday!

But...there is a Pinstrosity involved...

Apparently even though it'd been rinsed twice, not all the dye was out of the seams in the jacket. My nice new-to-me white shirt I just got at Savers now has a coral stripe around each arm. Awesome.

The Ten Commandments of Thrifting

I'll be the first to admit that I have a shopping problem.
The problem is that I don't get to do enough ;)
I LOVE to shop, and I love clothes, as my last post detailed completely redoing my closet I'm sure it's no surprise to you all that I am a total clothes horse. Where did that saying come from anyways???
Since we moved to a bigger town I have found the remedy to what ails me!

Thrift Shopping!
Don't get me wrong, I thrifted pretty often in our last spot, but donations weren't as great, the material only got rotated out every few months, and it just wasn't quite my scene. Where we live in Utah we have what is lovingly referred to as the D.I., short for Deseret Industries. This is a HUGE thrift store chain that you can find throughout Utah, Idaho, Arizona and a few other spots and they are AMAZING! For whatever reason people love to donate to the D.I. resulting in lots of items to shop from and I love to shop there! In the three months we have been here I have been there 4-5 times. Each time I find new stuff, great deals, and I notice that I'm not just cycling through the stuff I saw last time which is nice. They move a lot of product, and I can appreciate that.

Over these visits I have found some fun stuff I am going to share with you all today, and a few tips I have learned on the way, " The Ten Commandments of Thrifting" if you will,  which you may or may not have picked up on yourself.

1.Shop in season. Not only will they have more of what season you are in, or about to go into to, but then you can wear it right away which is not only exciting, but can insure that the item will fit if you wear it within two weeks of purchasing, rather than 6 months.
I really wanted to buy winter clothes over the summer and had zero luck at any thrift stores through Arizona, New Mexico AND Utah. Lesson learned.

2.Shop your current size. I know, I know you hear it in every women's magazine article ever, but more often than not if you buy something in the wrong size in hopes that the piece will be inspirational, or "this will be good for later", you generally (if you are like me) will just end up sticking it in the spare room, or in the back of your closet and you may forget about it and then it's been eight months and all you can think is, "Where did this come from?" and "This doesn't even fit, how discouraging.". Save the time and money and buy stuff that fits right this very moment and that you can enjoy now!

3.Buy like new. When you buy thrift items that need some sort of repair we tend to put them by the wayside and forget about them. Also, who wants to buy something and then have to mend a bunch of stuff...I don't even get to the mending of stuff I bought new and wore out. I like to wash and wear when I thrift shop, if I can't wash and wear it, I don't buy it.

4.Be choosy. It can be easy to buy a lot at thrift stores because things are so inexpensive, but I live by the "Love It" rule. If I don't walk out excited by the piece, or regretting that I didn't pick it up in an instant to insure someone else doesn't snag it, then I probably don't love it, and I will live without it.
I don't want to buy a bunch of t-shirts that are just so-so to fill up a closet when I can have two or three pieces that I am super excited to wear and make me feel fantastic.

5. Exchange! Not all thrift stores have an exchange policy, but the ones that do be sure to utilize! I bought a pair of shoes the other day that I thought I would love but once I got them home I saw that they didn't really fit my wardrobe and I still had the original tags, receipt and it was within the allotted days of return. I took them back, got in store credit and got one of the above dresses instead!

6. Go often. If you can, try to stop by often, even if it's only for five minutes between kid pickups and doctors appointments. Do a quick sweep of your favorite spots (furniture, shoes, art, etc.), and be back the next week or two to check them out again, this is how you get really great finds. Most people don't have time to stop by a lot, but I know some people who work from home that go once a week and have found famous original art, impeccable furniture pieces, funky costumes and some stellar brand name clothing all because they frequent their favorite spots.

7. Have a budget. I go in knowing I have $20 for two weeks worth of thrifting and I see what I can do with that. Some mom and pop shops will be willing to haggle, but some stops not so much. Give it a shot and see what you can get, it never hurts to ask.

8. Know when to say no. There are a few things I won't buy at thrift stores; underwear, lingerie, bed sheets, beauty products, to name a few. Everyone has different ideas of what is ok to buy used, you'll have to decide that for yourself, but please keep safety and sanitation at the top of your priority list! Also, sometimes you just have to use your better judgment and know when an item just won't look as great in your closet, or in your home, as it looks amongst all the other junk treasures surrounding it.

I almost took this fun guy home, I love the kitschy look, but the giant crack in the top and my husbands lack of enthusiasm persuaded me otherwise.

9. Know when to make an exception. Every once in a blue moon you will find something that defies all odds of logic or common sense, this item HAS to go home with you or you might just die right there in the middle of the hoards of 1970's furniture. This item is your thrifting unicorn. This is a very special rule, be careful not to abuse it, but every once in a while you will find an item that just makes you cry with happiness. Whether it is a abstract velvet bull fighter paining, or a clown clock that whistles at you, this item has to live with you forever despite what your logic tells you. Be careful what you choose as your unicorn, you only get a few! But absolutely have fun with it.

10. Wash everything! Just do it. Before anything else, everything must be appropriately washed and or sanitized.

I love thrifting! I often walk in the door not knowing exactly what I am looking for, but what I find is always fun (and sometimes I don't find anything which is fine too!). Use these suggestions as guidelines on your own thrifting adventures. Thrifting is great for me because it combines my limited shopping budget with my love to shop and my longing for quarkiness. There is really really really something out there for everyone.

Give it a shot and share your best finds with us, and any other great tips! If I get enough of your cool finds I will do a compilation post!

*All items pictured above (excluding amazing table) were found at thrift stores and now happily live in my closet*

The Em-Life: Keeping Up Appearances Day 7

**For 1 Week (and only one week, thank goodness!) Emilee and Marquette attempted to live a life that matched up to Social Media Standards, mostly just to show what that could look like in real life and how ridiculous the idea is. New to our Keeping Up Appearances series? See what all the fuss is about here, then catch up on what you missed on Day 1, Day 2, Day 3Day 4, and Day 5. Enjoy!**

Thank heavens Day 7 is upon us! It's my last day of the challenge and I could not be more ready to be done. I feel the things I had on my to-do list just sitting on the side lines and I can feel myself pulling towards my regular routine and my usual habits.
I did not get in all of my water today, I did not do my squats (for the 7th day in a row lol), I did follow my social media rules, I also washed my face, but only once today. I have really enjoyed waking up and reading something positive to start my day and I am happy to report I did that one all week! Woohoo!

As for the things I did accomplish today other than usual day-to-day stuff, here they are!
Here was my inspiration for my OOTD.

And my version!
Fedora: Target
Dress: JUNIEblake
Plaid Button Up: Target
Shoes: Converse

This outfit was crazy comfy! I wore it ALL day long, when usually I come home and I'm Misses-No-Pants the second I walk in the door, that says something! I get lots of compliments on this dress that I picked up from JUNIEblake, a clothing company from Thatcher, Arizona that I ADORE! Seriously their stuff is great quality, goes with everything, and is seriously comfortable.

I also did my nails day 7, I didn't really have a specific look I was trying to emulate but I got inspiration from a few sources on Pinterest.

I took a little bit from each of these and came up with my own look!

I did a shellac top coat on these as well because I'm a shine addict.
Unfortunately because it is just polish with a shellac top coat (they aren't built for each other), I don't expect these to last the Shellac promised 2 weeks, but they are fall-ish and I love them!

Those were the two pins I completed today, I literally didn't have the mind power to make dinner tonight so we each scrounged for leftovers.

Today was 1 week into paleo so I weighed in and saw that I lost 3 lbs. by cutting out (most) sugar, grains and dairy! Woohoo! Small victories!

Tomorrow I will share my final thoughts on the project, what I learned and what's next for me so make sure to stay tuned!

The Em-Life: Keeping Up Appearances Day 6

**For 1 Week (and only one week, thank goodness!) Emilee and Marquette attempted to live a life that matched up to Social Media Standards, mostly just to show what that could look like in real life and how ridiculous the idea is.New to our Keeping Up Appearances series? Get the 411 here, then catch up on Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, and Day 5.**

It's Sunday as I write this, and part of today's challenge was a OOTD picked out the day before and photographing said outfit in a style worthy of social media. Here is the pin I used, and my interpretation! I think I did pretty good!

Hayden Panettiere is cute and classic in this chambray dress and cognac fall boots! How did I do?!

Dress: Old Navy
Belt: Thrift Store Score
Leggings: Nike/Sport Authority
Boots: Zappos
Earrings: Rue 21

This look was comfy, simple, classic and I had everything I needed! I think I hit it pretty spot on! I really enjoyed this aspect of the challenge today!

I wanted to recreate a makeup look from Pinterest today as one of my Beauty to-do's on the list. With the fall weather blowing in I thought a good darker eye look would be fun.

Link for this eye look is here.
While the original is darker than mine, I thought I did pretty good with what I had on hand, and in truth it looked darker than this in person, so I would call this one a success!

I made another paleo dinner tonight! We had bacon wrapped chicken and veggies, and just now I am realizing I forgot to take a picture of this one too (will I ever figure this thing out?!).

But...here is the recipe I used, and I got a lot of compliments on it from Chip and a friend we had over for dinner too.

I can feel myself slowly waning as far as how many pins I complete in a day. I just feel it slowly fading to the way side as other more important priorities come into play such as work, and some teaching responsibilities I have at church etc. I am just starting to feel like, "Is this all necessary?", I know there are a few of the daily pins I will continue to do after this is all done, but I know that this is in no way sustainable for me in the long run. If anyone should know anything  about sustainability, it should be me, I majored in it!
Let me tell you, this perfection for the sake of social media thing is falling straight to the bottom of my priority list the longer this goes on. On the one hand I want so bad to finish this as strong as I started, but on the other I am proud of myself to see that social media standards just aren't what is as the most important to me...obviously. I have a project I am committed to with my business partner the requires me to aspire to Pinterest Perfection and I just can't get there, mostly because I don't see the need to get there! I have one day left of this...what will I do with it? I am as interested to see that as you are! Stay tuned for tomorrow!

The Kett-Files: Keeping Up Appearances, Day 5

To see what the Keeping Up Appearances Project is, click here. Or, click Day 1Day 2, Day 3, or Day 4 to see how the week has gone so far.

Day 5:
  • 8:26am: I feel quite a bit better today than I did yesterday. Man, yesterday kicked me on my tushy! And now I’m looking at the completely thrashed house and I don’t want to do this! I need to clean the house in order to get my chosen pins done for the day. I just keep finding work to do online because then I’m being productive.I know I’m going to have to face the house sometime though. Blah.
  • I decided to start the day with hot cocoa instead of my lemon water because it sounded yummy, and it was! White hot cocoa with Almond Joy creamer...MMMMMmmm!!
  • 11:11am: I’ve spent over 2 ½ hours blogging. The house is still trashed and I haven't’ done a single pin, but Emilee and I were able to get 9 blog posts written and scheduled, relaunch decisions made, and work done. Blogging can really take some serious time!! But now I’ve done everything I can think to do for right now, which means it’s time to face my house. At least Darrow went down for a nap easy finally. This is the first day I haven’t had to put him back in bed 20+ times before he fell asleep! Maybe the first thing I should do is go get the jeans off the clothesline that I put out to dry on Saturday. Oops.
  • 1:15pm: I put away the clean dishes, rewashed the gas clothes (no more gas smell! The vinegar and sunshine worked!), cleaned up Darrow’s toys (which are back out now that he’s up from his nap, ugh), fed us both lunch, cleaned up the jar Darrow dropped on the tile floor, switched over the laundry, and got the laundry in the room organized.
  • I swear teaching is the only job where you steal supplies from home to take to work. I was going to do the bath paints I had pinned for Darrow, but we have no cornstarch. It’s at Cameron’s classroom. Oh well.
  • 3:32 PM Getting dressed for the day makes so much of a difference! I finally got out of my pjs around 2:00 and I’ve been way more productive around the house in this last hour and a half than I’ve been all day. No wonder one of the things in that “5 ways successful people start their days” pin is to get dressed. I even did my hair and makeup!
  • For my hair I tried out the triple french braids ponytail from the hairstyling pin I found. I have a confession. I've never ever french braided my hair, and only have tried it one time on someone else. I get the concept, but I just haven't done it. It took a few tries, and it isn't beautiful, but I got it to work and liked it!
  • I even got brave and tried contouring again. I really like how today’s makeup turned out. I think it looks more natural than Saturday’s attempt.
  • I mimicked my outfit from one I had pinnedI didn't have the right jacket for the look, but the one I had worked (well, for the picture...it was too hot to wear it otherwise).
  • The kitchen is clean (as per the daily cleaningpin), and ready to make dinner here in a few hours. Darrow is bathed (it was easier to let him take a bath while I did my hair and makeup than it was to keep him out of the toilet).
And that's where I quit journaling for the day. I didn't finish. So let's go off of memory now just a few days later.

  • Since I couldn't do the bath paints pin for Darrow I decided to do a play dough pin I had saved instead. Somehow we've never tried playing with play dough for Darrow, and it's on the list of recommended things to work with him on from the Vision Specialist (fine motor skills and manipulation). I was in the middle of mixing it up when Cameron came home. This time I got a great reaction from him! He wowed and oohed and ahhed over makeup, hair, and outfit. I felt cute before, but then I felt like I'd really killed it. He agreed that this time my makeup was much better and he even liked the braids and little poof they made on top (which is not something he's a big fan of). Sweet! He helped me finish mixing up the playdough (using boring regular food coloring because I didn't get the gel coloring because I'm cheap). His interest in it lasted all of 5 minutes (tops!),  and he only wanted to poke holes in it. But maybe he'll be more interested later as we play with it more often. It is nice dough though, and was pretty simple to make.

  • And by that point we were hungry! So Cameron took Darrow outside to play and work on the yard while I got dinner put together. The yard was in sad shape when we moved in:

No one knows where to park or which door to use. The steps were mostly filled in, and with all the rain we got shortly after the weeds got even worse and covered the entire yard. We've been making plans and working on it trying to make it a nice place to be eventually. You'll see more posts in the future of what we're doing to transform this little house into more. So Darrow and Cameron worked on the yard and I put together a dinner pin I've had saved for months and months.
  • For dinner we did Pickle-Brine Chicken. This was supposed to be the meal for Day 4, but because I was sick it didn't happen. This did mean though that instead of 8-24 hours in the brine, the pickles had nearly 40 hours in the brine.I'd bought an 80oz jar of pickles long before we moved and had been working on eating the pickles to be able to have the brine for this. This was one of the fridge items that definitely came with us on the move! I was excited for the chance to try this out.  It was pretty straight-forward to put together. I used our large cast iron pan to cook these in/on, and they went together without a hitch. To go along with the chicken I threw together some mashed potatoes (I LOVE mashed potatoes!!) with the last 4 taters in the cupboard, leftover heavy cream from the cake, leftover mozzarella cheese from...from...what did I use that in this week?! Huh. Anyway...and garlic powder. It was yummy! And then just some frozen corn out of the freezer. It was a yummy meal! I loved the chicken!! Cameron's not a huge dill pickle fan, but he still liked the chicken.

  • The rest of the evening we went and delivered Prickly Pear Jelly for Family Night, and then hit up Dairy Queen on the way home.
  • I didn't quite get in all my water, and I didn't get in my exercises. Dang it.

The Kett-Files: Keeping Up Appearances, Day 3

**For 1 Week (and only one week, thank goodness!) Emilee and Marquette attempted to live a life that matched up to Social Media Standards, mostly just to show what that could look like in real life and how ridiculous the idea is. Click Day 1 or Day 2, to see how the week went so far.**

Day 3:
  • 11:03am: My first journaling is getting later and later…I need to stop that! My idea of a “Pinterest Perfect” Saturday is a little different from a normal weekday. I do have a good to do list for today, but this is the one day where we don’t have to set an alarm, where there are no pulls to get up early or get moving. Granted, once Darrow’s up we’re up so we cant’ always choose to sleep in, but we try. This morning he woke up at 6:15 and we pulled him in bed with us to “huggle”, as he calls it. We snuggled, dozed, and sang songs until around 7 when we actually got up…but only because at this point Darrow’s diaper had to be changed. So we got him up and dressed and got us dressed. I’m pretty much out of clean jeans so I’m in yoga pants and a long sleeved t-shirt today while I work.
  •  For breakfast I tried the mini quiche pin. I didn’t realize how mini I’d be making these. I forgot that when we moved we got rid of our normal muffin pan because it looked pretty bad…so my choices were my giant muffin tin (makes 6) or my mini muffin tin (makes 24). I went with the mini tin. Instead of mushrooms (I’m iffy on mushrooms) I diced up a bell pepper and then added some of the leftover chorizo we had in the fridge (because Cameron just prefers meat). These whipped up easy, baked great in the mini tin (and were faster than the original time on the recipe), and Cameron LOVED them.

I had 2 and was done. They weren’t bad…but they weren’t good. I didn’t really like the chorizo in them, but oh well. These will be easy to tweak and flavor differently in the future. I played with two different photos of these. The one above on our pretty wood island/counter extender, and one of them still in the pan.

The first picture is definitely more pretty and enticing and would be way more likely to be seen on instagram. The food is the same, but the staging makes a difference. It just goes to show that all these "perfect" and beautiful photos you see aren't necessarily how the big picture looks. Much of what we ooh and aah over is staged!
  •  While these were cooking I worked on dishes from the night before. This is one time when I love our small kitchen. It can go from looking completely trashed to nice and clean in about 20 minutes.
  • By the time the weekend is here Cameron is ready to get out of town or do something fun, but I had things I needed to do here. So to give me a Darrow free day and give him and Darrow some dude time, they went to Flagstaff to Bookmans and Sportsmans Warehouse while I stayed home to clean, work, type, and blog.
  • I started by looking up a pin for getting the gasoline smell out of clothes. Hauling the weed eater back the other day the gas can tipped over and spilled on our Ergo and on Darrow’s puff blanket we use when we travel. After 3 washings they still smelled like gas. So I found a pin that gave tips on what to do and I’m washing them again (while the load of jeans is out on the line to dry).
  •  Emilee and I chatted back and forth and picked the final design for the new blog. We’re excited about that.
  • Next I took some time to put together a post for my photography blog while I ate some leftover cheeseball and cherry bombs from last night. I have a good handful of fires going all at the same time and trying to keep them all lit and fueled can be kinda hard! Which is why I have a certain pin set to put together this week…but more on that later this week.
  • 12:56pm: I’m just having a hard time feeling motivated today. I just want to sit at the computer and work on the blog and on my business. I don’t want to get up and clean, or put make up on. I don’t want to be visually productive. I want to blog. I haven’t done my exercising yet today.
  • 1:30pm: I just got the toilet fizzies done!

Those weren’t as hard as they seemed. Super easy in fact. And I just threw one in the toilet and it fizzes! I used a combination of lemon, peppermint, and on-guard oils and it smells so good! I’m excited to have them. Now we’ll just have to test and see if they “clear the air” when the need arises (after further testing that when the time came, it doesn't clear the whole bathroom, but it does at least help) or if they make cleaning the toilet any easier.
  • 2:40pm: I just spent the last 40 minutes playing with makeup. I also got the items suggested in the “cheap contouring” pin and tried to follow that and a picture I had pinned from Instagram. Here's the before shot with no makeup on my face.
    And let the contouring begin!
(I was pretty timid at first about putting much of the white on my face...)

Once it got to the blending part, I didn’t really know what to do so I just swirled my sponge around to blur the lines…and it looked like I just had on regular foundation, no contouring (below you'll see my starting face-no makeup-on the left and the post contouring face on the right).

So I looked up “how to blend when contouring” and found a video tutorial that looked good and watched it. That made more sense! So I went in and washed my face off and did it again, this time using the video as my base (and I totally forgot to take a before picture once I was there in the bathroom! Doh!!).

This time I was a little more liberal with the amount of white I used.

I got to this point and started to worry. That sure is a lot of white! But belting some Phantom of the Opera helped and I went on to try blending like I saw in the video. I think I still blended a little too much in some spots and not enough in others, but this time was a little better.
I liked it. So I put on the rest of my makeup.
Since my original pre-contour face was in the living room, I went back out there to try and get a good "after" shot.
This time it went a lot better! I feel like there’s a difference between the start and end this round.

I like it! I need more practice, but it's not bad. We’ll see what Cameron says when he gets home.
  • Cameron got home around 3:40ish. I was so excited for him to see my makeup job; he loves it when I do my makeup. He didn’t say anything. And didn’t say anything. And didn’t say anything. So I finally asked, “So, what do you think of my makeup?”. I felt so cute and pretty, I was sure I was going to get a great response. “Well, it’s a little bright. And you’re face looks extra long. And I’d probably blend this more. I don’t know.” And then he realized my face had fallen. "Oh...wait. I should have started that different." Poor Cameron. This "Pinterest Perfect Week" has been a hard experiment on him. He hasn't been acting normal. He goes back and forth trying to decide whether to give a critique on the new things I'm trying, or whether to just praise them, or whether any mention should be made. I'm trying so many new things and have been so stressed, he's just not sure even how to respond. I knew he wasn't trying to hurt my feelings with what he was saying about the makeup, he was trying to give an honest reflection of the pros and cons he saw so that I could make an informed decision on repeating this pin in the future. He spent the rest of the evening telling me how pretty I looked. I didn't even think about how this project would affect him. I'm learning way way way more with this experiment than I ever imagined I would.
  • I then had to get dressed. I had found various red dress pins on Pinterest that showed different colors of accessories. Using that as my inspiration I wanted to take my JunieBlake Adrianne dress and do two different looks, one for tonight for the Women's Conference at church and another version for church services the next day. But I realized I just don't have much by way of accessories to change it up much. This got hard! I finally went with a red and white look, planning on doing a red and gold the next day.
Finding somewhere to take a quick picture was a little tricky. So I picked the cleanest corner of the house and Cameron snapped a shot and I cropped it. Want the real (as in I kicked things out of the way and moved the stuff on the couch to the other end but left the rest) look?
Now, want the real real look from the other side of the room?
I tell you, it's all about the staging.
  • I spent the conference trying to not blow my nose in the quiet parts of the broadcast. My allergies have hit suddenly really bad and I’m pretty sure I’ve wiped off all the makeup on my nose and the nearby proximity. Glad I went to all that work. Oh well. The broadcast was nice and I got to visit with some fun friends, so it was all good.
  • 10:30pm: Oh! The chicken for tomorrow needs to marinate! I was on my way to bed when I remembered.
  • 10:40pm: Chicken is marinating. It looks like a jar from an evil scientists lab…but hopefully it’ll taste good.
  • I got in all my water today, but totally missed the squat challenge and the 3 minute workout.
