Reindeer Regrets

Martha is many great ideas and pretty things that make us think "I can do that" and then we can't...hey, kinda like Pinterest! Hahaha. What is it about those two? Maybe it's because Martha and Pinterest make everything seem so easy. Anyway, Susan found these adorable reindeer cookies and decided to give them a try.
The Original Pin
Susan tells us, "Tried to make these cute reindeer cookies ... but they came out not quite so cute!"

The Pinstrosity

This is the reindeer we never hear about, the one Santa sends down the chimney first to make sure the fireplace isn't lit. Maybe he's just the black sheep of the family.

Honestly, I don't think those cookies are all that bad, but as far as looking like the original pin there is a bit of a difference.
  • Martha appears to have used gingerbread and it looks like Susan used sugar cookies. This difference caused the difference in shapes of the reindeer. It looks like they both used a gingerbread man cookie cutter shape ('s an up-side-down man), but Susan's sugar cookies filled in more as the cookie baked (and/or maybe her cookie cutter man was a little more squat than Martha's).
  • I'm not quite sure what happened with the icing, and why Susan's is black. Last icing color in the house? But even with the black icing, it's not all that bad.
So it didn't quite turn out as hoped, but it still looks like a reindeer to me, and even still looks like a cookie to me. I'm sure her family didn't even care that these weren't twins to Martha's reindeer.

  1. This is awesome! Thanks so much for posting! I am so happy I made your blog!

  2. Hey, you don't actually have to post this comment, but you've got the pinstrosity and the original pin mixed up. Just thought you might want to know.

    1. Thanks Diedre, I fixed it! Does that count as a Pinstrosity? I must've been tired that day.

  3. When decorating cookies like this, it's best to go at it with a "flooding" technique for royal icing and some very fain paintbrushes for detail. You also have to make sure the icing is exactly the right consistency, something that can be a little tedious. The Pinstrosity looks like she just went at the cookies with maybe a butterknife. No bueno.

  4. Super late to the party but if you look at the original Martha Stewart project, Martha uses melted chocolate to decorate the cookie, not royal icing. I imagine that would make it easier to decorate and then you also don't need to mess with food coloring either

  5. It also looks like the icing melted off the cookie, which would mean the cookies weren't completely cooled. Whenever I have a cookie cutter shape that has spread too much, I use the cutter to redefine the shape when I take the cookies out of the oven.

  6. I actually think the pinstrosity looks more like a reindeer because of the spread out cookie. Martha's are such perfectly shaped gingerbread men that to me they look like weird upside down alien men.

  7. I actually made these just last weekend and they were great! I used white icing in a tube and drew on the antlers and some ears, and chocolate icing to pipe on the eyes and a smile. They were a hit! I'd put up a photo but I don't know how!
