Coffee Grounds for Hair Growth

How many of you have seen the following pin going around?

"No Way! Finally, a way to get rid of unwanted hair ANYWHERE! For 1 week, rub 2 tbsp coffee grounds mixed with 1 tsp baking soda. The baking soda intensifies the compounds of the coffee breaking down the hair follicles at the root!"

Did you pin it excitedly as a way to lessen hair and to use up your coffee grounds? Yeah? Well don't try it. This one looked fishy to me right away, so I started to do some reading. Let me show you some blurbs I found by googling "effects of coffee grounds on hair":

Increase In Average Growth Of Hair Follicles
When Dr. Fischer compared the hair follicles treated with caffeine against those that weren’t, he discovered some interesting results. The average growth of the follicles treated with caffeine increased by around 46 per cent compared to the control group. In addition, the life cycle of the hair treated with caffeine was extended by 37 percent. Caffeine boosted the length of the hairs by between 33 and 40 per cent.
Dr Fischer noted that “hair follicles treated with caffeine showed a highly significant growth rate at 24 hours and still showed further significant growth at eight days.”http://www.hairboutique.com/blogs_p/index.php/2012/09/10/coffee-hair-growth-secrets/

Hair Shine Solution Let’s face it, everyone wants to have shiny and bouncy hair. Some people spend significant amounts of cash just to make their hair look better. You can look no further than your supply of used coffee grounds to give you softer and shinier hair. Just wash your hair with the coffee byproduct and rinse. You will soon sport your favorite celebrity hairstyle after a few strokes.

Soften and shine hair
Before lathering up your tresses with your favorite organic shampoo, scrunch a handful of coffee grounds into wet hair. It may feel a tad strange at first—like rubbing sandy grit into your hair—but that coarse stuff is actually good for them. Once you’ve worked the grinds into your mane, rinse thoroughly. The grounds will remove any product build-up and leave your locks glossy and smooth. Beauty disclaimer: You may not want to use this method if you have bleached or light hair, as it may darken the color.

Coffee for Hair Growth
Why stop with your skin when your hair can benefit from caffeine as well? The way that caffeine increases your circulation can be applied to hair growth. When massaged directly into your scalp, caffeine can stimulate the hair follicles to speed up growth.Let brewed coffee chill, and pour it into a spray bottle for easy use. While in the shower, spray the coffee onto roots as an after-cleansing scalp treatment, and allow it to sit for as long as possible. Rinse your hair, and use products as usual. You will likely notice less shedding and increased hair growth with regular use.

Convinced yet? So this will not get rid of unwanted hair...it'll make it stronger. Someone thought they were funny when they put that caption on a Pin.

So what does that picture really go to?

 Facial exfoliant / faux beard

"Facial Exfoliant:
Coffee grounds are abrasive enough to scrub with, but are soft enough to be used on your face. Gently massage a small amount of spent coffee grounds into your face to use as an exfoliant. The sensation was like rubbing sand into my face, and not unpleasant. My skin was left feeling smooth, tingly and with an espresso aftershave aroma that would make Juan Valdez blush."

"Faux Beard:
Feel free to get carried away and give yourself a fearsome coffee-beard while you're doing the exfoliation."

While reading for this post I did find this handy tip for anyone needing a good stubbly beard:
Mix coffee grounds and Vaseline together and rub that on your face. The Vaseline will help the grounds stick to your face so your beard doesn't fall off slowly. But some people have had issues with the coffee grounds burning their face...so maybe you actually shouldn't use this for costume...just to freak out your spouse or roommate.

Moral of the story: Don't trust everything you see on Pinterest. Or the Internet. Question everything and don't be afraid to seek and learn.
teehee, I love this.

  4. I was seriously considering using the original pin but hesitated since it didn't link to anything. I'm trying the mask you posted now, I'll let you know how it goes.

  5. Lol! I was pretty sure this one wouldn't work. However, if it really does increase hair strength and growth, it might be worth trying since I'm about to go through postpartum shedding.

  6. This reminds me of the one that I saw to make a face mask with cinnamon to calm down redness. Cinnamon will bring blood to the surface of the skin and make it more red! Common sense isn't so common these days...

  7. I seriously just put this on fb a few weeks ago (face mask was one of the jokes):

"I love Pinterest, but want to see what would happen if I just start posting weird random fake stuff. I can't be the only one right?
    Refried bean face mask?
    Turkey flavored Jell-O shots?
    White out eye liner?"

  10. Oh my goodness thank you for shedding light on this! I use coffee, baking cocoa and milk as a facial mask and it works wonders (and even makes your face smell all coffee-y) but I would never believed it would remove hair. So again-thank you!

  11. I saw that and was like, "No. That will definitely not work," haha. Reminds me of an ecard I saw where someone said they'd post on Pinterest that bacon grease would remove unwanted hair . . . seems like someone got this idea from that! I was just waiting for you guys or Pintester to do a post and debunk it haha.

  12. Hahaha Lacey I've been tempted to do the same thing, with the phony DIYs and "life hacks." People are so gullible...
And Muneca... you are kidding... right??

  13. I like the mis-attributed quotation. It's even better when the picture is Benjamin Franklin.

  14. Someone posted this on Pinterest yesterday, and I NEVER comment, but I left one saying this was fake and a joke. Today I got a response: "Hmmm...." That's IT? Like, she doesn't believe me (or the internet?) but actually believes THIS?? I tried to re-direct her to here, but Pinterest said my pin was "spam". WTH?

  15. I like this site, because I have seen some pins that made me say "hmm... I wonder if this really works." some stuff I want to try just to see if it does.. but of course, nothing at my expense!! So thanks for the heads up because I was going to try it!

  16. I wonder if this works on actual hair too. :) According to the experts on average, we lose fifty to a hundred hairs a day, which is said that's a normal cycle. One thing that could scare me is that hair loss may be a sign of a more serious medical condition that needs an evaluation by a dermatologist and possible treatment.

  18. Yes I use coffee grounds and baking soda to treat my skin all the time...at different times, everyone loves my skin and hair. I even use a soak to actually dye my hair with natural shiny results with coffee. My hair grows really fast tooo, its at my knees... baking soda I use to scrub... also with coffee. its not the coffee alone or the baking soda alone that creates this great way to control unwanted body hair... its the combo. A chemical reaction happens when the two are combined... but this method like all natural methods takes time... like the ant oil, takes time but works permanently, you can do the same thing with lite pressure from a pumas stone... anyone ever sanded? Eventually after time you will no longer have hair were you rub. Like the person who lets there jeans rub or has worn a sock to long it eventually does not grow back because of friction. But with the coffee and baking soda not only lite friction is applied here but a chemical reaction, so instead of a year it might take half that time... dedication is the name of the game. how bad do you want it? I do it everyday and I have no unwanted body hair, (including the coarse ones) but I keep doing it even though I have achieved my goal so it does not come back :) no more waxing or pain, or stubble for this girl :) i do wear gloves as not to stain my nails :)

    1. Hi Rebecca,
I hope you are well. I just wanted to ask you a few questions in regards to hair removal with baking soda and coffee .Your help would be greatly appreciated!
I did a patch test on my hand for few days and applied mixture and let it rest for 5 minutes with no results. I did not wax or shave beforehand.
1: is this supposed to act like a hair removal cream or a hair inhibitor? Do you apply mixture after shaving or waxing?
2: The mixture is wet and doesn’t hold well together and is not much of a scrub. Do you apply mixture onto loofah or sponge and scrub body or do you apply mixture onto body and let it lye for while (although mixture too wet and crumbly to rest on skin...)? How long do you let mixture on skin and can you rinse it afterwards? if the liquid is most important part of mixture so do you think brewing coffee and baking soda and using the liquid as a rinse would have any effect?
      Thanks Rebecca!
      Take care,
      Carla

  20. Hi! Just want to ask how often should I put coffee grounds on my hair? Would it be advisable if I used it everyday? And for how long should the grounds stay before I rinse it off? I badly need answers..thank you very much

  21. Just saw that pin today and was extra excited because I have PCOS. But since it was spammed, I decided to look it up, thinking it may be a dirty joke. And voila! Thanks for this information.

    1. Coconut oil wouldn't change the effects of the coffee grounds unfortunately.
