Your last names first letter with a copy of your marriage license mod podged on, adorable, especially because monograms are super in right now.
Here is Barbara's take on it (we smudged out all her personal information...she didn't make it with the smudges):

Not quite the cute letter she had in mind, so she decided to make a cute flower to put on it and see how that helped:
Ok so here is where things went awry. If you notice in the original picture, the letter is from a store, it even still has the sticker on it. That means the license isn't real, and the lettering can therefore be cute, because it isn't a legal document. As far as I can tell Barbara's license is from California, now I got married in AZ and our license is pretty cute (lincensurely speaking, yes I made that word up). I could easily do this with our license but there is more too it than just mod podge.
If you look at the original, the edges are distressed, which defiantly add to the shabby chic feel. This can easily be done after all the mod podge is dry with some sandpaper, but don't go to crazy or it will look to shabby. Also props to Barbara for adding the cute flower piece I might steal that, it adds some much needed texture and color. :)
Can I add that not every state will be cute, seeing as I have not been married in every state I can't say who has the cutest license, never thought I would be having this convo "Who's marriage license is cutest?! Hawaii in the house? Perhaps we could get Rhode Island on the map for this one?!". So Pinstrosipeeps...give us the feedback who's license is the most crafty friendly here?! Cute lettering is a definite must!

P.S. Cute lettering really doesn't have anything to do with it, my marriage license really isn't all that special compared to anyone else's in the lettering department, but it is by far one of my most prized possessions because it says that my husband is mine forever, and well I can't think of a single thing more important than that.

DeleteWell, I just dug out my marriage license because of this post, and it looks like Kentucky passes the cute test! It has a sort of scalloped border, and the main lettering is a sort of Gothic/Calligraphy style. The fill-in-the-blank parts (like our names and the date) are a more boring, xerox-type lettering, but overall, I think it would be cute. I have pinned this, too, and if I ever get around to actually making it, I'll let you guys know!

ReplyDeleteI'm not married, so can't weigh in on my state's cuteness... but I hope I hear that Minnesota has amazingly cute marriage licenses or I'm MOVING! (Kidding. Mostly.)
I have an idea for those who have not so cute marriage licenses. You can go to dafont.com and download a cute font that you like. Then try and recreate what your marriage license looks like. That way, you can make it as cute as you would like and you will also be able to add to the certain style that you are going for. If you want to incorporate the signatures that are on the license, just photocopy those, and add them in there somehow. I would totally do this and try to give a photo example, but I haven't gotten married yet. So this is the best idea I can come up with.
ReplyDeleteThat "D" made me laugh out loud! My Maryland marriage license is REALLY boring. Like Apple Chancery and Times New Roman boring. But my LDS Temple certificate is much nicer.
ReplyDeleteWhy not make a "fake" one? If you Google vintage marriage license, you'll find some beautiful ones. Photoshop out the original names & date and add yours. I don't see why it has to be a copy of the "official" one, because - well, it's not the original one anyway. :)
ReplyDeleteWe got married by a justice of the peace in Illinois, and we got a commemorative "license" with a fancy font and everything, suitable for framing and old-timey-looking and we had to send away (and pay $25 for) a "real" official legal copy of our marriage license to have on file.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with everyone saying "make your own fake license" for this project. You could use whatever font you want, look at old marriage licenses for inspiration, etc and totally customize it all. This is a pretty cute idea, and one I might do with a photocopy of our fake marriage license.
I was laughing at first, only because I thought the "D" stood for Divorce to put a spin on things. You know how people have Divorce parties...a big "D" with a copy of signed divorced papers would be hilarious! lol

DeleteThe original pin (the A) isn't even covered in a marriage license/certificate. It's random "cute" French written in fancy calligraphy. If you look closely, you can see a price tag on the bottom right and it looks like this is a picture from a store.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I LOVE this idea and am going to do something similar (using an enlarged photocopy) with my great-grandparent's marriage certificate. It has some seriously lovely hand lettered calligraphy.
I noticed that too. I wondered if that was even mod-podged on there or if it was just a store purchase. Oregon marriage licenses look exactly like the one the pinster made with the "D". We have a nice pretty one but it's all put in a frame and has gold fleck and don't think it would copy well so we could use it for a mod-podge project. Cute idea though.
DeleteI have a NJ marriage lisence and it certainly NOT cute. It's the pink page from a 3 page carbon copy (yes I said carbon copy. Gah I'm old!). My husband framed it and it's hanging in our bedroom, but no one will ever call it cute.

ReplyDeleteI got a plain, ugly, official license from the county, but a nice, "commemorative" one from the church where I was married.

I got married in Indiana, and the official license is ugly (pretty much like the D up there) but they also give you a "ceremonial" one that looks like a certificate that is much prettier... So I suppose I would have to copy that one.
ReplyDeleteI got married in Indiana, and our official marriage license was definitely ugly, but the county clerk's office also gave us a commemorative license that was much nicer looking, just had no legal value.

ReplyDeleteNevada in the house! LOL. The great thing about getting married in NV (and no, it wasn't a crazy Vegas wedding, my husband and I grew up in Henderson), is that you get TWO! You get a cute little decorative one (which is not your actual LEGAL document) and the boring plain Legal paperwork for the DMV. They take into account that you may want to frame it ect. I'd have to make a copy of it though, since it IS on cardstock and even has the official embossed silver seal of NV. This is not a project I'm going to bother with (we have a certain flair in our house and Shabby Chic is not it), but NV is a winner for sure

Oklahoma has cute calligraphy marriage licenses! :) I got married in 2009. I've had this project pinned for a while. I might just try it with mine, since it passes the cute test. haha
ReplyDeleteSo marriage license now has other use instead of just being a plain marriage document?;) Having monograms applied in your wedding ceremony supplies is both peculiar and fun at the same time.
ReplyDeleteThey usually give you the legal document (the one that isn't so pretty) as well as the display version with script and nice lettering. If you haven't received one I believe you can request them from the state you married in. .:)
