My face met the bottom of a pool last night and I'm not feeling witty at all at the moment...more bruised and like a knucklehead...but hey we all have those moments right? Anyway...

My face probably feels like those cakes did...but at least they taste good. I'm sure my face does not taste good, especially with the Desert Miracle Salve I'm trying on it.
My friend made the m&m cake and it turned out great. I wonder what her secret was.

ReplyDeleteI made the kit kat cake, a rainbow for the insides and skittle instead of m&ms and it turned out better than their picture.
ReplyDeleteI made the kitkat cake for my nephew's birthday with no problems, my niece and nephews even helped put the kitkats on the cake.

ReplyDeleteI made the kit kat and mm cake and it cake out perfect. You have to be sure you attach the kit kats AS SOON AS YOU FINISH FROSTING, so the frosting is still sticky. And the mm's go on LAST. On a table full of desserts, this was the first thing gone! (I used a homemade pound cake with homemade buttercream icing.)
ReplyDeleteI'm with everyone else. Ive made the kit kat cake twice and its been beyond awesome. actually its saved me considering my lack of skills to frost a cake with out getting crumbs in the frosting. :)
ReplyDeleteI have made 2 already and they both turn out really cute. The only thing that I did that was different bc it had a lot of candy in it. I for the center I did chocolate cover strawberries and it was a big hit. I wish that I could post picture's of it so that you can see it. I used can icing!!! who have time to make the icing now days?..lol
ReplyDeleteI've made the kit Kat cake and it turned out great!!! Everyone loved it and it was a nice change from regular cakes. It went quickly!! I''ll be making it again this Fall :)
ReplyDeleteI made this last year for a bake sale and it came out just like the picture. Granted I had to use a lot of kit kat bars. It still worked.
ReplyDeleteI made the kit-kat cake...looked beautiful from the outside but the second you cut into it, it was a mess. The cake was coming apart in huge chunks, I think because I didn't wait long enough for it to cool before putting the icing on. I was able to cover the messy cake/goopy frosting up with the kit-kats and m&ms. It held together much better after I put the ribbon on...I would definitely test-make this cake before actually bringing one to a party!

ReplyDeleteI had the kit-kat and M&M cake for my birthday earlier this year, and it turned out amazing, nearly as good as the picture. I'm not sure what went wrong with theirs XD
ReplyDeleteI'll bet that they didn't allow the cake to cool completely prior to putting the icing onto the cake. I will be attempting to make this cake Thursday.... hoping that it comes out well!
ReplyDeleteyou can't use cheap pre-made icing. The icing consistency is key. Use proper high quality icing recipe, not too much icing and try again. both cakes should be easy to make if you follow my advice.
ReplyDeleteI've made the kit kat cake twice. The first time was had M&M's in the center, with a chocolate cake and canned chocolate frosting. The second time was also a chocolate cake with canned chocolate frosting, but had rolo's placed around the top and I made a fondant bow and placed it in the center. Both cakes turned out perfect.

ReplyDeleteI did the kit kat cake as well. Mine came out perfect and I never even needed the ribbon to hold it together. I made sure to frost both the cake and back of each kit kat so they would bond to each other.
ReplyDeleteI also did the kit kat cake. It turned out awesome and was a great hit at my son's candy themed party. I didn't need to use the ribbon to hold it together. I believe I used Duncan Hines whipped frosting. I think the above person is correct in saying these cakes pictured probably didn't get a chance to cool completely before they were decorated.

ReplyDeleteI've had two friends who did the kitkat bar cake and turned out perfect! I've done the pink cake and mine was great too. of course I am a baker though ;) idk what went wrong here
ReplyDelete@dear Marquette: it's not you, it's the canned icing! The myth is that "cake mixes and canned icings are the easiest thing for beginners to decorate with" -- this is pure BS. In fact I sponsored a decorating contest a few years back -- each contestant had been "speed/bakey decorating" for over 10 years. We were kind to them -- their cakes were baked in 8" aluminum cake pans (not the angled 9" no sticks everyone seems to have in a drawer under their oven). We gave them two cans of icing (there's no human way to stretch one can to fill and ice a 2-layer cake!). We gave them the plastic tip set with the bag icing (rather than the impossible toothpaste tube variety) and a butter knife. They all struggled! After 20 minutes we had 4 cakes that were just this side of pitiful :-). I've been teaching advanced decorating for ten years and the first advice I give is: use a doctored cake mix or scratch recipe; box mixes are soft and crumbly. Use homemade icing - only 4 ingredients and it's cheaper anyway -- and doesn't have the emulsifiers that the cans have (that make the icing run down the sides of the cake even DAYS after you decorate). Actually I have a ton of other advice..
