I just did this b/c one day I wanted 'grilled cheese' and I didn't want to get out a pan. We moved overseas & left our toaster oven behind. The electricity is different. We bought a basic 2 slice toaster when we got here. I put a piece of bread, with a cheese slice single on it (fits perfectly without going over the edges). It has the "cage" in it & it's a modern toaster (purchased new, Ciatron brand, I think...last winter). I tip it on it's side...slide my toast in...and just watch it. As soon as the cheese is melty I let it pop up & put the second piece on. I haven't had an issue with it yet. And my toaster is sort of roundish...not perfectly flat, either. Sometimes I use the classic American, sometimes pepper jack. My sandwich maker tells me when it's done, plus the toasted bread does too. I take it out, cut it into 4 strips (like sticks) and dip it into my tomato soup.
